Hugh Grant has been revealed as an Oompa Loompa in the upcoming film Wonka, which is set to feature Timothée Chalamet as a young Willy Wonka. The film, a prequel to Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, is directed by Paul King, who previously worked with Grant on the Paddington films. During the CinemaCon 2023 event in Las Vegas, King shared footage of the orange-skinned Oompa Loompa in a glass case, whom Wonka discovers and frees. Grant’s character then proceeds to perform a catchy song and dance to remind Wonka of the nature of Oompa Loompas.

Wonka will be the third film adaptation of Dahl’s book, with Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp previously playing the title role. In addition to the upcoming film, Taika Waititi is set to write, direct, and executive produce an animated series centered on the Oompa Loompas who work in Wonka’s factory.

The prequel will explore Wonka’s early adventures before he became a chocolate magnate, and will also feature Colman’s character and a chocolate that makes people fly. King, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Simon Farnaby, aims to infuse the film with musical whimsy and heartfelt sincerity.

During the footage screened at CinemaCon, a character played by Sally Hawkins delivers the line, “Every good thing in this world started with a dream, so you hold on to yours.” This sentiment reflects the theme of chasing one’s dreams that is central to Wonka’s character and the spirit of Dahl’s beloved story.
