Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon of olive oil
  • 4 slices of bacon or pancetta, diced into pieces
  • 1 red chili or jalapeño pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 large cloves of garlic, crushed
  • 1 medium-sized red onion, finely diced
  • 1 tablespoon of brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of dry sherry or cider vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ cup of passata (strained tomatoes)
  • 2 cups of cooked navy (haricot) beans

Instructions

  • Begin by heating the olive oil in a skillet and adding the bacon or pancetta. Cook until it turns brown (you can drain any excess fat at this point).
  • Next, add the chili or jalapeño and cook for one minute.
  • Incorporate the diced onion and cook for approximately five minutes, or until it becomes soft. Then, add the brown sugar and continue cooking until it caramelizes.
  • Add the dry sherry or cider vinegar to deglaze the pan.
  • Now, introduce the Worcestershire sauce, followed by the passata. Bring the mixture to a boil and let it simmer uncovered for about five minutes.
  • Finally, add the baked beans, bring it back to a boil, and let it simmer for another five minutes to allow the beans to absorb the flavor of the sauce.
  • Serve with potato cakes, English muffins, or on toast for a delightful breakfast.
