Ingredients
Ingredients for Black Bean Burgers:
- 2 (15oz) cans of black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1/2 cup of rolled oats
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon of chili powder
- 1 teaspoon of paprika
- 2 teaspoons of ground cumin
- 2 tablespoons of soy sauce or tamari
- 1 teaspoon of olive oil
- Salt and pepper
- 1 egg (optional)
Toppings (optional):
- Burger buns
- Tomato
- Lettuce
- Red Onion
- Chipotle mayo
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook for 3-5 minutes until tender.
- In a food processor or blender, add rolled oats and pulse until finely ground, approximately 30 seconds.
- Add black beans, cooked onions, cooked garlic, chili powder, ground cumin, paprika, and soy sauce to the food processor. Pulse until well combined, scraping the sides as needed. The mixture should be thoroughly mixed but not overly mushy; a few black bean chunks should remain. Season with additional salt and pepper to taste. (If you wish to add an egg to improve binding, incorporate it at this stage by whisking and mixing it with a spatula.)
- Shape the black bean mixture into 4 burger patties.
- Heat a grill, grill pan, or regular pan to medium-high heat (if using a pan, add a drizzle of olive oil). Add the burger patties to the grill and cook for 5-6 minutes per side until they are golden brown and heated through.
- Once cooked, place the black bean patties in burger buns and add your preferred toppings.
- After cooling, store the burgers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Notes
Feel free to add an egg to improve binding if the mixture is too crumbly or soft.
