Elon Musk sacks loyal Twitter executive who slept at office as he axes 200 jobs

Elon Musk has announced that 200 jobs will be cut from Twitter, including Esther Crawford, a loyal executive who famously slept at the company’s headquarters to prove her dedication. Crawford joined Twitter in December 2020 and was responsible for introducing the controversial “blue tick” verification, which required users to pay. However, Musk has now removed her from her post, along with 200 other employees, over the weekend.

In response to her sacking, Crawford released a statement saying that her hard work and optimism were not mistakes, and that she was proud of her team for building through chaos and noise. Meanwhile, Musk appeared to reference the sackings in a tweet, saying, “Hope you have a good Sunday. First day of the rest of your life.”

There were initial concerns about the picture Crawford uploaded of herself sleeping at the office, with some worrying that Musk was creating an unhealthy environment. However, Crawford explained that doing hard things requires sacrifice, and that she wanted to show up for her team and keep them unblocked.

Musk’s tenure as Twitter owner has been marked by significant shake-ups since he took over in October 2022, including the laying off of 3,700 workers in November due to a “massive drop in revenue” caused by advertiser concerns over the company’s direction. Despite this, Musk has stated that he acquired Twitter not to make more money, but to try and help humanity by creating a common digital town square where a wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy manner without resorting to violence.
