In a harrowing case that has stunned the community, a 25-year-old pregnant mother in Tacoma, Washington has been accused of brutally killing her three-year-old son, Prince, after he wet the bed.
According to police reports, Ivey Marie Lewis called emergency services on February 12th to report an unresponsive child at her home. Responding officers found the victim, who had a badly bruised and burnt face with cuts, was already dead. Further investigation revealed that he had suffered blunt force trauma to the head, and marks all over his body suggested he had been beaten with a blunt object.
Initially, Lewis claimed that Prince would regularly run into walls head-first, but police found dried blood spattered on the walls of the home, prompting a deeper investigation. The mother eventually confessed to using a belt and an electrical cord to whip the boy, after he urinated on a mattress. Tragically, this punishment ultimately led to his death.
Lewis now faces murder charges and is being held in custody. Meanwhile, her other one-year-old son has been placed in protective custody. The case remains under investigation.
In a heart-wrenching statement on an online fundraising page set up to help the family, Prince’s aunt expressed her devastation and disbelief over the tragedy. “Prince was the sweetest boy I knew,” she wrote. “Many know the story but just in case you don’t my nephew was killed by his own mother who suffered from mental illness beyond our understanding.”
This case highlights the devastating effects of child abuse and the importance of recognizing and addressing mental health issues. Prince’s tragic death has left his family and community reeling with grief, but serves as a reminder to all of us to be vigilant and to seek help when we or those around us are struggling with mental health issues.
